Winter Walking Skills

Step cuttingOur introductory courses will provide you with the essential skills for walking in the winter hills.

Designed for summer hill walkers or those looking to extend or brush up their experiences into the winter months.

Core skills covered are .

  • What to wear, what to carry and how to use it.
  • How to use your winter boots. Essential foot work.
  • Ice axe and crampon use. Cutting steps, plunging and other core skills.
  • Snow pack analysis, avalanche avoidance and emergency response.
  • Self-arrest techniques.

Winter NavigationWhen possible on  these courses we may use the uplift at the Glencoe Ski Resort or Nevis Range to access the snow and higher mountain areas to maximise your time in the snow line . If we use the chair lift there is a small additional cost.

Course Duration

The courses can be one or two days duration. Two days offers you time to put all the theory and skills into practice whilst ascending fabulous summits (Max ratio 1:6).
